Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a viral infection which is passed between people through skin-to-skin contact. There are more than about 100 varieties of HPV, 40 of which are passed through sexual contact and can affect genitals, mouth, or throat. HPV is named for warts (papillomas) some HPV types can cause. Some other HPV types can lead to cancer. Men and women can get cancer of mouth/ throat, and anus/rectum caused by HPV infections.
